Enough chocolate?

Another snippet from The Comic: if you're ever the designated shopper for an all-girl camping trip, try to understand how much chocolate means to some people. I didn't.

If you're lucky enough to eat clouds....

... you should test them very scientifically before proceeding to large mouthfuls. Sniff, taste, look - yum!

These are a few frames from The Comic. It feels odd to post things that are still in pencil, but in the interests of consistency I'm trying to pencil the whole thing before I start inking it. And sometimes when I've managed to draw really nice hands, I just have to show someone.

Saturday market

Our stall at Saturday's Neighbourgoods market. Let's see... from top left, clockwise: Heather's trays, my toys, Heather's tea-towels, my bags, Hannah's t-shirts, Heather's t-shirts, my and Heather's badges, folded tea-towels, my crochet badges, my marble magnets (yep, they still sell), one of my bags, Carla's organisers, and the corner of one of Heather's cushions.

Jenny's dolls were supposed to be there as well, but due to my carelessness in packing up the last show, could not be gotten hold of in time.

Liquorice Bunnies

These bunnies were finished for the market on Saturday.

New badges

Unsold badges from the last market, reinvented!

And in case any Chris Ware fans missed it, have a look here. Chris Ware does The New Yorker.... wow....

More creatures

Two more creatures. They didn't make the deadline for the Creatures show, but I decided to finish them anyway.

In print, slightly

Flipping through Mr Price Home's latest advertising supplement (what DO you call these things? Junkmail - they don't come in the post. Brochures? Catalogues? Parasite magazines?) I noticed a desk. Hmmm, I need a desk. Started trying to figure out how big it was.... if that's a laptop in the corner there, it's probably about - hey! that's my picture! Behind the other one! No, there ... a bit up ... no, to the right ... look closer ... yep, that's it. It's from DrawingRoom2. Granted, it's sheer luck I spotted it, and you can't actually see it, but I think it's funny.

Cigar box cut-outs

This is an old one, from when cigar boxes were being turned into handbags. I made a few, still have them, and think I'll turn them into storage boxes or something, replacing the handles with tassels. This one is decorated all over, top, bottom and sides. Sticking the fiddly vines down with woodglue was the fun part.

Bast book: Reclaiming Fear

I just received my copy of this book. It's written by Rape Crisis counsellors who needed something specific, relevant, and local for their clients.

'Reclaiming Fear is the first book of the BAST workbook series, and focuses on understanding the various aspects of fear, how it affects us, how it can control us, and as a final step, how we can reclaim fear as the healthy ally it is supposed to be.' - from the blurb on the back cover.

I'm pretty sure it's not available in bookshops yet, but enquiries can be made at bast@bast.org.za

My connection? I did the pictures.

This has nothing to do with work

I've been working on some of those ink drawings for text books that Heather mentioned last week, so I've been a bit lax about posting. But - I found these in my bathroom this morning! I'm a sucker for symmetry, and I do like pink right now. Really, I just want to draw flowers.

I did manage to squeeze in 3 frames of The Comic today, which hasn't happened for about a week. Can't show that, though, because it's all scribbly illegible pencil.

A is for Apple

These dolls went to 'A is for Apple' on Friday. It's a new children's bookshop in Kloofnek Road; great for browsing through children's books and there's a coffee shop too!

Important news

Due on bookshelves soon, this book illustrated by Hannah Morris. Hannah is part of the HandMade Now! crew; she embroiders t-shirts, paints ceramics, and studies a lot.

The book is published by Vuvu and has it's own site where you can see sample pages.

New badges

Some new ideas for badges - with off-centre designs to counter the upsetting off-centredness of the finished badges. I'm still fiddling with colours. Looks like I really like pink this week.

Neighbourgoods market

A photo Heather took of my dolls at the market on Saturday. She has more photos on her blog.

From top LH corner, clockwise: Medina's cushions, Hannah's bowls, Heather's kiddie shirts, my dolls, Jenny's dolls. (Have a look at Jenny's paintings here.)

Not sure about the display - I thought the dolls would look sweet all huddled together in a box, but turns out you can't see them that well. We'll have to think of something else for the next one.

I only sold one doll at the market, but yesterday I sold ten (TEN!!!) to a shop. I'll have to make more to fill another order for next week, and so far none of the knitters I've managed to find have been very productive. Which means that the house won't be cleaned this weekend.

Mucking about with linocuts

I did a series of linocuts last year, patterned backgrounds with blank person-shaped spaces. This is one of the proofs, with a person filled in in pencil.
