Proper prints

You know how you can put something off for ages and ages and then one morning you wake up, say some rude words (ok, maybe not out loud), and get cracking? Or is that just me?

I was supposed to be making cushion covers today, but instead I printed up editions of these linocuts. As soon as they're dry, I'll trim and edition them and have them in my Etsy shop. Along with some cushion covers, I hope.

Random

Almost immediately after working out how to construct a repeat pattern from separate blocks, I felt compelled to print a random, non-repeating pattern. Small rebellion!

I've listed the four fabric panels in my Etsy shop.

Shop update

I've just listed all of these prints in my shop: the creamy-coloured ones are on a beautiful heavy linen cotton blend, and delicious to work with. (I made a couple of bags and cushion covers from it last week, for the Kamersvol Geskenke show that starts tomorrow.) The others are on medium-weight cotton; the blue is slightly textured, and the green and gold have a dull sheen that produced very crisp prints.

Movable Type

It's been around for a while, but not until today did it occur to me to use this printing innovation to make repeat prints. Really rather obvious if you take a moment to think about it. Anyway....

A few hiccups because the blocks are now thicker than I'm used to, and muscle memory is a persistent thing. But printed panels of these are in the pipeline! (Apologies for the awful photo; daylight left us at about 4 pm today. Hot and rainy, lovely weather, but not good for pics.)

I've also been digging around in my folders, and updating my Flickr page with old drawings and prints. Spring cleaning on all levels!

Roses?

A new print I've done for the upcoming Kamersvol Geskenke show. I pretty much made the flowers up, but I think they look enough like roses to qualify for the name.

Kamersvol Geskenke

It's Kamersvol Geskenke time again! Please excuse me for the next week as I frantically sew and cut and paste and print to get everything ready in time.

If you can't beat them....

New kitchen counter curtains. We had plain ones here before, but they do get dripped on, usually with coffee or something equally dark and staining. So why fight it? It's a kitchen, and coffee is a good thing.

Before, and after:

And now it's time to stop procrastinating and do the washing up that I cropped out of the photos.

Street photos

Not photos of people in the street, but photos found in the street. The top one is a negative, and a bit scratched, and I just fiddled around with Paintshop to try and see what was going on in it.

I'd like to believe that the girl in the bottom photo is the woman in the top one; she has the same hairstyle and expression, and the photo looks about right for around 1959 or so. But I found the photos several months apart, in different streets, so it's unlikely they have any relation to each other.

Still, they look like family. The bottom one immediately reminded me of a story about my great-grandmother: when the town council wanted to widen the main street of the town, they went door-to-door informing residents that everyone would lose a fraction of their front gardens. My great-grandmother allegedly stood firm behind her front gate, and told the officials: "Nottedêm."
So the wider main street ended up with a narrower kink in it.

(For years I thought 'nottedêm' was an Afrikaans swear word. It took me ages to realise it was 'Not a damn'.)

Beautiful

The loveliest parcel arrived today! I've been following and so I whisper for a while now, luxuriating daily in Anabel's beautiful photographs of knitting and crochet and beads and flowers.

But no photograph can convey the softness and lightness of this scarf, or capture the subtlety of the colour. It's honestly one of the most wonderful things I've ever touched. Thank you, Anabel!

My new/old cardigan

From a 1964 Stitchcraft pattern, using wool I found at a secondhand shop.

Another shot, just to emphasize the extreme sparkliness of it all, and the perfectly shiny buttons.

The pattern, and the wool. You'll understand why I didn't try to recreate the photo. I left out the bobbles on the sleeves and the fronts - even I thought that might be just a bit too much!

The wool, just for the sceptics out there. It really is wool.

I finally came up with a good rationalisation for not blocking things before I sew them together: it's in case I don't like it, and have to make something else from the wool. But I need to wear the garment a little before I can be sure. And then, when I wash it, voila! It's blocked.

My Friday

Last week Thaya of Beatnik Bazaar tagged me. The task? To show what Friday looks like here.

First up, a great big giant cup of Skinny coffee.

Next, got Emile's bed outside (as per his request - he stands in the spot and stares at the ground until I get the 'hint').

Breakfast.
The sun arrived, as predicted.

Got a load of laundry into the machine first thing, so that I could wash another load and get it dry. These are old woollen coats, now in pieces, that I'm hoping to print on and make bags and things from.

Took advantage of the first warm day in ages to block the collar of a new cardigan. Vintage pattern and vintage wool.

Finished sewing up a bunch of notebook covers.

Swept the house out. It was only after we moved here that I realised that this is where dust is made. Probably should have damp mopped as well, but got bored.

Salt River market for veggies! This week the yams were all individually labelled as "Yam" - with post-its.

Fresh peas, broad beans, and some of those green things. I forget what they're called, but they're really good diced and cooked in stock with potatoes. Also, a rolling pin, for printing. This one is made from a solid piece of wood, instead of having the handles glued in, and it's heavy. Strangely enough, bought at the gas place, not the market.

Lunch. Scrambled egg and pea sandwiches. Really wanted bacon and egg, but the shop was out of cooked bacon. Compensated by cooking the peas in lots of butter and adding cheese.

A bit of real work: started cutting a custom lino block for someone to print with.

Finished off a repeat pattern that someone else will have printed up and make dresses from!

Sanded down a blackboard I painted in spare moments last week. Made from an old picture frame.

Cut card inners for the notebook covers.

And finally, a bit of scampering.

What I didn't do: make the bed, get glass for the kitchen window, cut linings for bags. Oh, well.

Custard Apple

Actually, a cherimoya. Definitely and absolutely and undoubtedly the most delicious fruit I've ever eaten. Bought at the Salt River veggie market.

Spot the Hedgehog

Gorgeous little hedgehog made from one of my prints by Apple and Eve!

I love his little snout! See more of Eva's beautiful animals and dolls in her Etsy shop.

Connections (and closures and buttons....)

Notebook covers are back in the shop, with an improvement: elastic straps to keep them closed. No idea why I didn't think of this sooner, I snap my Moleskine diary's strap a couple of times a day.

Apparently I was getting more oxygen to my brain than usual, because this suddenly occurred to me:

Some of my brooches work beautifully as pendants. All that's needed is a chain threaded through the clasp. And if it works with those, it should work with any brooch:

And it does!

More Pattern Lady prints coming soon, but they've already hit the limelight on Babazeka and hello little riley. The ladies would like to express their thanks; it's been a dull few decades for them up to now.

Pattern Ladies go live

Pattern Lady purses and pencil cases are now in my shop (along with a few other new designs).

I might have to put my shipping prices up a little bit in the next few days, to allow for the strength of the Rand against the US$, but for the moment everything's still shipping at old prices.

Pattern Ladies

First prints of the vintage sewing pattern ladies have turned out well! I've printed bags, book covers and small purses, and if I ignore all the kitchen unpacking that still has to happen and sew instead, I'll have them in the shop by Monday. Seems perfectly possible!

I'm still trying to make up my mind about the 'ghostliness' of some of the prints. I struggle to print large areas of flat colour with lino blocks, so I'm considering reworking some of these silhouettes into something like line drawings. But on the other hand, this texture is what I like about block printing, and perhaps it's just a matter of printing in the right colours.

What do you think? (And is it just me, or do different colours of silkscreen ink smell different?)

My mom's so cool!

On the very same day I saw this post on Elle Decoration, my mom arrived with the sweetest little wire sheep for me. She's so hip she doesn't even need to read the internet!

And the background? That's my lovely new pristine kitchen/printing studio. We're cooking supper for the first time in a week tonight, and tomorrow I'm printing.
