These gorgeous block printed textiles are by HomeSweet. She doesn't have an Etsy shop yet, but you can follow her progress to that end on her blog.
Just a random aside: is it 'blockprints' or 'block prints' or even 'block-prints'? I tend towards 'blockprints', but I'm Afrikaans and we just make up new words by running existing ones together.
Well, I get confused about these things all the time, because in Danish we also just stick words together and then we have a new one. Easy peasy. :-)
ReplyDeleteHmm. It seems like I should know how to spell blockprint, but I don't know the answer either! Thanks so much for the post!
ReplyDeletehmm, well while you're working out block prints/blockprints/block-prints, can you let me know about screen printing/screenprinting/screen-printing?
ReplyDeleteSo glad you bring this up because as a non native speaker I never know how to write these words. I've seen them written in every way and can't get an idea which is the most correct. Hope someone can shed any light on this block printing case (as well as on screen printing as Alex points out).
ReplyDeleteJesse, thanks for introducing HomeSweet prints, she's doing a very nice job there!
I've been watching HomeSweet's trials and progress on her blog. I look forward to her unveiling.
ReplyDeleteah who cares how you spell it, we know what you mean (and very lovely they are too), and sometimes if you think about these things too much, they just do your head in!!
ReplyDeleteMmmm, interesting question. Firstly, English usage differs in US and UK. US usage is more relaxed - certainly they do not use as many hyphens. In SA we stick to "Oxford" English though. Secondly, language changes - constantly! In the past we would have hyphenated words such as screen-printing and block-printing. But the 6th edition of the OED got rid of thousands of hyphens, so I think that now it will be screenprinting and blockprinting. (I should get the new edition!) And lastly, if one worries about hyphens too much, you will surely go mad, as one publisher's house style guide wittily puts it.
ReplyDeleteI always say: when in doubt, stick a hyphen in. (I hope I used that colon properly!) HomeSweet makes some beautiful prints, one way or another! Very inspiring. I think I've seen those foam sheets at the art supply shop but couldn't figure out what they were meant for. I wonder how long they hold up.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Anairam! Good to know I can continue with my instinctive squishing together of words.
ReplyDeleteYardwork: we'll have to keep an eye on HomeSweet's blog to find out more about the stamps. I'm curious too, because linoleum doesn't last as well as I'd like it to.
