I confess, I made him up.
I've been wanting to somehow separate my printed textiles from my illustration work, instead of producing everything under the same name. I played around with words and drew logos, but nothing seemed quite right, until out of the blue it hit me: Henri Kuikens!
You may know them as spider plants, but in Afrikaans they're called Hen-en-Kuikens, and for years I knew them as Henrikuikens. (My mother talks very fast. Words get blurred.)
I still need to update my website with a section for Henri, but perhaps now that there are two us, things will happen faster! Buttons, ribbons, brooches and notebooks are already for sale at
Milk in Long Street and
The Fringe on Kloof.
Nice to meet you, Henri Kuikens! Cute name.
ReplyDeleteLOVE it! hello, henri!
ReplyDeleteGreat name Jesse (and good idea to split yourself in two to make the work go faster ;)
ReplyDeleteHeh! That's awesome! Is Henri's style different from yours...? ;-)
ReplyDelete} aangename kennis mr kuikens. dis 'n vreeslike koel naam ;)

ReplyDeletehello henri!
Hi Henri - You might be made up, but you've got a lovely history!
ReplyDeleteFantastic! Love the story behind the name.
ReplyDeletedag heer Kuikens, ik ben benieuwd!
ReplyDeleteLove this! Made me giggle. Lovely idea. x
ReplyDeleteSounds like hen and chicks in German (Henne und Küken), although it is a different plant all together. Nice name for a brand, when I read it I thought I had heard of it before... So good name recognition! Excited to see if his line leans more masculine (I'm picturing Ernest Hemingway esc).
ReplyDeleteOh dear. I have just ripped out 11 little Henri Kuikens(es) from my tiny back garden. How was I to know that he is a person? Now I feel bad.
