Ambitious
If you thought blockprinting was time-consuming, try stencilling... I spent the best part of a week cutting this stencil from acetate (wanted it to be reusable, durable, transparent etc etc) and that was fun, in a precise, mindless, peaceful way. The resulting prints:
I tried stencilling mainly because I wanted to be able to overprint colours, and get the registration right. Also because I didn't think printing such a large block would be easy.
But I really don't know about this texture. I could learn to love it, but it's not what I imagined I'd get. And it takes a loooong time. Back to the blocks, I think.

wow! amazing first crack at it, though!
h, I happen to love the texture! I really think that's beautiful. I say stick with it :)
Good idea though Jesse...this (beautiful:) design seems like it would be a difficult job with a block! I've been thinking alot about silkscreen printing and am hoping to learn in 2008..have you ever tried it?
But it looks fantastic! Did you print it with a roller? Otherwise you can use it with a silkscreen without having to expose a screen, and it at least makes the printing part quicker. Even though it takes AGES to cut out, isn't it satisfying?
I started with a roller, because I'd done some smaller stencils with a roller before. I ended up taking the foam part off the roller and using it to dab the ink on. And silkscreening did indeed come to mind while I was doing this - I'm just reluctant to go there.... Past silkscreening experiences have not been good!
I think it's outrageously beautiful!
speechless. just how big is this thing ? it's wonderful, and i too like the texture...don't give up on this.
PHENOMENAL!!
Absolutely beautiful ...so I think it was definitely worth all the time and effort you put into it. :)
i love it! what a work.
I like it very much! Love the texture!
beautiful beautiful BEAUTIFUL!
ambitious indeed....stunning too.
I love it no matter what you think of it! It's gorgeous to say the least.
Your close-ups remind me a bit of Ryan McGuinness Project Rainbow. That beautiful look of different textures and layers that you can get in printing processes.
Jesse, that is sooooo beautiful! Wow. Blown away.
Jesse, that's exquisitely beautiful! I love the brown-grey overlay and the texture(it enhances the 'fragility' of the design). How do you fix the acetate stencil to the fabric before inking?
That's absolutely gorgeous-- I love the overlay of colors.
Gorgeous. What ink are you using? And what are you putting the ink on with? I haven't printed in years (!) so I'm so out of the loop.
You are incredibly talented, that's all I want to say.
