The World Cup isn't really about soccer. It's about making things in all that extra time you have to spend in front of the tv, watching soccer.
I used this pattern (which I can only find in Afrikaans, sorry). After gathering all the bits of mohair I've ever been given, red and a truly strange mottled soapy green emerged as the dominant colours. Oh well....
In a vain attempt at structure, I made the centre of each block red, and let loose with whatever other colour combination was at hand. Some worked well, others not so well, but that wasn't the point. I ran out of some colours early on, and started sewing blocks together as soon as there were enough to cover my knees, so the middle of the blanket is a lot more blue than the edges.
But look how fluffy and warm!It's not finished yet, but I have until Sunday. I'm out of everything but pink and mottled green. So that will be the border. Yep.

Looks like the African flower hexagon..
That green seems to be a popular color for mohair. I got 3 skeins of it from a flea market in Ireland for a few cents. I kept thinking I'd dye it, but I ended up giving it away. I wonder if it eventually made its way around the world.
It is beautiful! What a good idea to have a specific 'world cup' project like that. I have done a lot of different bits of hand work during the world cup and am going to miss it now that it's almost over.

Wow! What a great blanket! Love the colors. Mohair? Would never have thought to use it for a blanket, but it looks awesome and must feel great too. I also did a lot of knitting and crochet in front of the TV watching soccer games!
I think what you call your 'vain attempt at structure' has really worked - the red centres make all the colours hang together beautifully. Nice.
well actually I love how the colours have turned out!
I was hoping for symbols but sigh, there are none.
